#KC13 - Australian
"The Wedding"
Acrylic on Canvas
14" x 21"
Joanne Nangala, Luritja/Papunya
Joanne Nangala is the daughter of legendary Aboriginal painter, Pansy Napangarti. Joanne has become a popular painter in her own right.

She was born in Port Hedland, Western Australia, in 1972. She was made a ward of the State, a common event for Aboriginal children.

Her father located her and picked her up, along with her brother. He took both to Papunya, where he worked and lived.

Joanne learned to paint from her mother, learning her mother's dreamings as a child, sitting at the edge of the canvas as her mother painted.

At 16, she moved to Katherine, NT for schooling. Subsequently, she joined her mother in Alice Springs, NT and soon began painting herself. At 17, she left Alice Springs to travel the outback. Eventually, she settled in Darwin, her current home.

She sells at Darwin's Mindil Beach Market, where we met her and purchased this painting.

This work uses traditional iconography but pushes the technique from a design standpoint. Can you see the wedding icons?
