Matthew Baker, Squamish Nation is an indigenous wood carver, born in 1953, on the Capilano Reservation in North Vancouver, BC. His father is Coast Salish. His mother is Kwakiutl. His father, Richard, a master totem carver taught Matthew to carve in Kwakiutl style. Matthew has carved for more than 1/4 century. He creates plaques and and other traditional native artifacts in Coast Salish and Kwakiutl iconography, using traditional tri-color designs on unstained wood. His artistry can be seen in Vancouver and collections around the world.
