#DG57
Tribal Group:
Dogon of Mali - West Africa,
Mask, wood,
carved as a Walu, or antelope, for use in
the Walu funerary ceremonies. Deep set eyes in channels remind us of Dogon
architecture. Speckled and pink paint decorates the face, ears and sides.
The Walu
legend is fascinating of itself and commemorates both the passing Dogon
tribe members but also an ancient story of the Walu's attempts to protect
the sun.
What appears
to be rabbit ears are actually intended to represent the upright horns
of the Walu (antelope).
Size: 16.5" tall x 7" wide
